FAQ

Everything people ask

What does Back-Trac Spinal Decompression treat?
Disc and nerve problems in the lower back and the neck: herniated and bulging discs, cervical disc herniation, sciatica, neck pain that runs into the shoulders, arms or hands, numbness or tingling, pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc problems and facet pain. Every new patient starts with a free first visit to find out whether non-surgical spinal decompression is appropriate. Conditions we treat.
What happens at my free first visit?
A one-on-one consultation with Dr. Metcalf, a review of your MRI or X-rays if you have them, an exam, and your first spinal decompression treatment the same day. You'll leave knowing whether you're a candidate.
Is the first visit really free?
Yes, for new patients: the consultation, the imaging review, the exam and your first treatment, with no obligation.
What happens after the free visit?
If you're a candidate, Dr. Metcalf goes over a plan with you and you decide. Nothing is decided in a hallway. If you're not a candidate, we tell you and point you to the right next step.
Will insurance cover this?
No. Insurance doesn't cover non-surgical spinal decompression. We have payment options to work with most situations, and your first visit is free.
How do I set my first visit?
Send the short form on any page, or call or text (913) 355-5998. We text you within a minute to set your free first visit, any hour. If you don't check the text box, we call you back.
How does spinal decompression work?
It is non-surgical, and you are seated and reclined for it, not face-down and not in a harness. The table gently separates the vertebrae to take pressure off a disc and the nerve beside it, then releases, in a controlled cycle. Treatment can be directed at the low back or the neck, and the settings are set for you. How it works, in plain English.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe it as comfortable, and some fall asleep. You are seated and reclined, not face-down, and the force is gradual and set for you. If anything is uncomfortable, the settings change.
Does it work for neck pain?
Yes. It is the same seated, reclined treatment, set for the neck: for neck pain, a cervical disc, and pain, numbness or tingling that runs into the shoulders, arms and hands. About neck pain.
What if it doesn't work for me?
We measure your response from the first visit, so we both know whether it is working. If the numbers aren't moving, we tell you, change the plan, or point you to a different kind of care. No outcome is promised to anyone before an exam.
What if I'm not a candidate?
We tell you at the first visit, and we point you to the right next step: a physician, a specialist, a physical therapist or imaging. Spinal decompression is usually not right for spinal fractures, severe osteoporosis, tumors or infection, and some conditions we screen for at your first visit. If you've had a fusion or have hardware, we check how long ago and clear it with you at the first visit.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. If someone helps you with decisions, bring them: Dr. Metcalf goes over everything with both of you.
Do I need an MRI?
Not to come in. The exam comes first, and if your findings call for imaging, we'll say so and help you arrange it. If you have an MRI or X-rays, bring them.
Can I bring my MRI?
Please do. Bring the report and, if you have it, the disc or a link to the images. Dr. Metcalf reviews it with you at the first visit.
I've already had back surgery. Can you still help?
Often, yes. At the first visit we ask what was done and how long ago, look at your operative report and imaging if you have them, and examine you. If you've had a fusion or have hardware, we check how long ago and clear it with you at the first visit. We can't promise an outcome, and if it isn't right for you we say so and point you to the right next step. About pain after back surgery.
Do you treat herniated discs?
Yes, when the exam shows the herniation is the source of your symptoms and the pattern is one spinal decompression suits. Many herniated discs improve without surgery. About herniated discs.
Do you treat cervical disc herniations?
Yes, when the exam shows a disc in the neck is behind your neck, shoulder, arm or hand symptoms and the pattern is one spinal decompression suits. About cervical disc herniation.
Do you treat sciatica?
Yes. Sciatica is a symptom with several possible causes, and the first visit identifies yours. When a disc is pressing on the nerve root, spinal decompression is often appropriate. About sciatica.
Do you treat bulging discs?
Yes, when the bulge is actually the reason you hurt. Bulging discs are common on MRI and are often painless, so the exam matters. About bulging discs.
Do you treat spinal stenosis?
Some patients with spinal stenosis are appropriate for spinal decompression and some are not. We are careful about the difference, and the first visit is where we tell you honestly which group you are in. About spinal stenosis.
